The Personality of the Saint

image of the Guru

The picture of the Saint that you are viewing in this website is the most famous visual representation of Srimanta Sankardeva and depicts his magnificent and benign personality in its resplendent and almost transcendent glory. The artist behind this incredibly beautiful visualization is Kalaguru Bishnu Rabha, one of the artistic and literary geniuses of modern Assam.

In drawing this master-piece, the artist, one gets the impression, has followed Madhavadeva's pen-picture of his dear Guru Sankara. In one of his verses, Madhava wrote of his Master:

Handsome to look at,
his whole physique is white and resplendent like the sun.
His sight, pleasing to people in assemblies, can destroy sins.
He is handsome without the aid of any ornaments, grave and majestic and wise.
His lotus-like eyes are large and extremely charming; and his complexion is like the light of the moon.
His gait looks like the lovely pace of an elephant. His voice is deep like thunder...
