The Scripts used in the Manuscripts
In view of the styles used in these manuscripts, one can trace four categories of scripts:
- Kāitheli
- Lahkari (Kāitheli in Kamrup)
- Bāmuniyā
- Gadgānyā
The Kāitheli script was used by Sankaradeva and his immediate followers. It is very artistic, clean and wavy while the Gadgānyā script is simple and straight. The Bāmuniyā script, on the other hand, is tortuous resembling Devanagari, old Bengali and Maithili. These scripts generally could be seen in the manuscripts found in Goalpara and Kamrup.
