Sankaradeva and Brahmaputra: Oil on Canvas by Mabegum Pasa

Sankaradeva happened to see a huge tree being carried away by the mighty Brahmaputra. He tells his followers - he needs to get the tree - and dives into the river. After reaching the tree (a huge Chandan tree), he started to swim towards the bank with the tree. But, Brahmaputra was taking the tree for his annual offering at Jagannatha Temple, (Puri, India); so he started to pull the tree towards the main stream. But it did not take long for Brahmaputra to realize that Sankaradeva is not an ordinary person. Having realized that and having seen God in him, he gives a sizeable branch to Sankaradeva and carries away the rest as planned before. It is said that the Brahmaputra became his devotee after this incident.
